Study of 1 John

Study of 1 John

As we embark on a journey through the book of 1 John we are going to see that it is a book for today. During the time that John wrote this book the church was under attack by false teachers. John writes to set the record straight showing that these false teachers are not truly saved and sets out the correct doctrine. He corrects false views on God, Jesus Christ, sin, Christian living, the Holy Spirit, true salvation, and that Jesus is coming again.

But as John gives correct teaching condemning the false teachers he also wants to reassure the believers in regard to true fellowship with God and one another; true salvation; the knowledge of God; and true Christian living.

John makes it a point to let us know his purpose in writing, that you may know and have assurance, (1:4; 2:3, 5, 29; 3:14, 16, 24; 4:13, 16; 5:15, 18, 19, 20).

He writes that we may experience the fullness of joy in Christ (1:4); that we may not sin but when we do we have assurance of forgiveness (2:1); that you may know the truth and stand strong (2:26), but the key verse is (5:13) so that we may know we have eternal life giving us assurance of salvation which is not based on what we say but the change that has happened since Jesus came into our life.

As we walk through the series we should grow more confident in our faith and more bold in our walk with Jesus and as a church growing our love for God and each other.
